Year 4 students began their fifth English unit “Amazing Animals” which is on newspaper reports. Students explored sample newspapers and learned about the parts, features and the layout of newspaper reports. Then, students were each given a page in a newspaper and they were asked to identify and label the features that are present, such as the date, headlines, photographs, captions, reporter’s name, and advertisements.

Students also read a newspaper report about how dolphins communicate and performed a jigsaw activity to identify the main points in each section. Expert groups were asked to write a one-sentence summary about their assigned section before forming new groups to share their findings.
